Size, Shedding, and Activity Levels
The largest dog breeds include Central Asian Shepard Dogs, English Mastiffs, Great Danes, and St. Bernards. The smallest include Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Maltese, and Boston Terriers. Larger dogs require larger spaces to run and it is recommended to have larger houses for them to live in. Smaller dogs are more suitable for smaller houses and outdoor conditions. Click here for more information on large dog breeds and click here for more information on smaller dog breeds. Smaller dogs on average tend to have a longer life span then larger dogs.

Shedding can be useful to know if you have any allergies when it comes to dogs. Dog breeds that shed the most include Golden Retrievers, American Eskimo Dogs, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Chow Chows, and German Shepards. Dog breeds that shed the least include Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese, Boxers, and Basenjis. For families that include people who are allergic to dogs, hypoallergenic breeds may be the best. That includes Poodles, Kerry Blue Terriers, and Shih Tzus.
The most active dog breeds include Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherd, Border Collies, Dalmatians and Huskies.
Dogs with lower activity levels include Basset Hounds, Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Great Danes.

Australian Shepherds are a more active dog breed. My Mini Australian Shepard is very small, so she can get a lot of exercise in smaller places like my family living room. She requires a lot of attention and even at her older age, requires a lot of playing. She sheds moderately so even as a person allergic to dogs, I have no problem with her shedding.
