Recommended Breeds for Families
Labrador Retrievers, Bulldogs, Golden Retrievers, and Collies are all known to be great with families and kids. Beagles, Pugs, Irish Setter, Brussels Griffon, and Newfoundland French Bulldog are also recommended for families. Many of these dog breeds are some of the most popular breeds, assumingly for their reputation as family dogs. All puppies go through the stage where they jump up, so in my opinion the smaller the dog the easier it is to manage that with children before the puppy is trained. Dogs with a lower need for activity can be better for busier families, while dogs with an increased need for exercise are better for less busy families.
I have a Mini Australian Shepherd, and she is perfect with kids! In my personal experience, my Mini Australian Sheperd had a leg issue due to her not getting enough exercise before we got her. She required a large amount of activity for her leg to become fully healed. My family knew that we had the time and yard to give her plenty of exercise, and her leg was fully healed in a month. Mini Australian Shepherds also need mental exercise as well as physical exercise. All dog breeds should have mental exercise, but some dog breeds have more of a need for it than others. Bordier Collies are another great example of dog breeds that require constant mental exercise. This website sells interactive dog toys for mental stimulation. There are also some more affordable options on Amazon.
If your family is struggling financially, it is not the best time to add a member to your family. On average, yearly vaccines for a dog can cost between $500-$1500. This doesn't include unforeseen health issues or circumstances that require your dog to go to the vet.
